Services for Employers Hiring Veterans
IDES and our partner agencies have quality resources and information to help employers hire skilled veterans and comply with federal legal requirements. To access these resources, click from the list or resources below:
Illinois Skills Match is IDES' online job matching service. It matches jobseeker skills with employer job openings in Illinois
This link contains national resources for hiring veterans, including America's Job Bank, an online job matching service, and the O*NET, which can help employers align military educational and job training curricula with current civilian workplace needs.
This link contains the Federal Contractor Report on Veteran's Employment (VETS-100) and contractor guidelines for hiring veterans. Employers who have contracted (or subcontracted) with the federal government for goods and/or services over a specified amount are required by federal law to take affirmative action to hire and promote qualified veterans. Employers must also list job openings with the nearest Illinois Employment and Training Center (IETC).
Tax credits for hiring veterans
The Welfare-to Work and Work Opportunity tax credits encourage employers to hire certain types of workers, including veterans, from families currently or recently receiving public assistance or food stamps. If you qualify, your employer can apply to IDES for a federal income-tax credit of up to $8,500.
The Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act
A veteran who has recently returned from a tour of duty has special reemployment rights under federal law. The Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA) provides benefits and remedies to returning service members who are seeking re-employment with their former employers.
