WorkNet Employee Honored

The 2008 Samuel L. Parks Award went to Illinois WorkNet employee Andy Michnowski, a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran. Michnowski continues to serve his country by aiding fellow veterans who need assistance transitioning into job readiness after returning home from war.

Michnowski was honored for his outstanding employment services and for going "above and beyond the call of duty" to provide services to veterans through quality outreach and job development activities.

Michnowski said he gets satisfaction out of his job because he is able to work so closely with other veterans in need.

"I really care about my vets," Michnowski said. "They're like family to me."

One such example of his dedication to veterans came last April as he personally drove a vet to a job interview after the vet could not find adequate transportation. Michnowski coached the vet all the way to the interview, which resulted in the vet being hired on the spot and offered a substantial salary.

"We're the only ones who can really talk to each other," Michnowski said of fellow veterans. "If we don't help each other, who will?"

Michnowski said he has received calls from veterans all over the country in need of his assistance.

"They spread the word around," he said. "I have received a lot of letters with positive feedback. With vets, it's all about trust based on word of mouth."
